Teen skin with Dermalogica

Dermalogica teen treatments

I’ve always had really good skin, I’ve been so lucky. Probably due to genes as I never had a particularly amazing skin routine growing up. But my husband on the other hand really struggled with acne and our eldest daughter, Ruby has unfortunately inherited his skin problems. At first it was during puberty, the spots started to appear and get worse as she’s got older. Now 16 she struggles with redness, flaky skin and breakouts and although she’s a confident, gorgeous girl. I know it sometimes gets her down and it’s so hard to see her struggle with it.

Ruby had heard amazing things about Dermalogica for teen skin so we set up a skin consultation with one of their experts via zoom, to talk through the options of what she could do as a skincare routine to help manage her skin.

Kelly, the consultant was absolutely amazing. She put Ruby at ease and was really friendly helping Ruby to open up about what she suffers with. Her knowledge of the Dermalogica products was so extensive and she soon laid out a programme for Ruby to follow which would hopefully help her with the redness and breakouts.

Firstly I should say that Ruby is under medication for her skin as well as using the products from Dermologica. Ruby has been using the following products for about a month and almost immediately she noticed a difference to her skin.

*Dermalogica Kindly gifted these products to Ruby so that she could try them out. The following words are her honest opinion.

  • Precleanse Oil - This is applied to dry skin and gently massaged in. Adding a little water to emulsify and then rinsed off.

  • UltraCalming Cleanser - This is a gentle gel cream cleanser which is applied to the skin then either rinsed off or tissued off.

    Rubys verdict:

Using them twice a day gets all the dirt off my face and i’ve noticed that it reduces redness and my skin feels less textured. I like how you don’t have to use water with the cleanser so if i’m feeling lazy, I can just wipe it off with cotton pads!

  • Hydrating Lotion - Use a light layer all over the face

    Rubys verdict:

Skin is a lot less flaky and dry and it’s really easy to apply and feels really smooth. It feels light so I don’t get a heavy feeling on my skin.

  • Invisible Physical Defense SPF30 – Really important to layer over the hydrating lotion in the daytime to protect the skin from UV.

    Rubys verdict:

It has a lovely texture that feels thick enough to protect from the sun. It blends really nicely into my skin and doesn’t feel greasy.

The Dermalogica team also sent us the following products to try when Ruby comes off her medication, but these aren’t to be used while on the prescription gel that Ruby is on. When she is no longer using this on her face, she is going to try these products too.

  • Clear Start Breakout Foaming wash - This is for the body/back and massaged in and rinsed off in the shower.

  • Clear Start All over toner - Once out of the show spritz over the back and body where breakouts are.

  • Clear Start Breakout Clearing booster - This is an on the spot treatment and can be used under moisturiser on the face and body – if the skin feels too dry or sensitive don’t use on the face.

  • FlashFoliant - This would be used after the double cleanse. It doesn’t need rinsing off and then you would apply the Soothing Hydrating Lotion and SPF afterwards. Flashfoliant is a chemical exfoliant so it’s important to wear SPF when using that product.

Kelly had great advice for Ruby about other things she can do to help with breakouts on her body. This included washing hair first before using the products. Not to rub the skin with towels (try to use soft flannels and a new one each day ideally). Pat skin with towels and apply skin care gently – especially if the skin is red or feeling sensitive. Use cooler water on your face (and body)– not hot when washing the face. Always double cleanse twice a day and use SPF everyday. Change pillows regularly and lastly drink more water to help flush out toxins, carry nutrients through the body and improve blood circulation.

Ruby’s skin has been for the most part much better and as she’s on medication, we are aware that this has helped her skin breakouts reduce. But the combination of both medication and the Dermalogica products has helped reduce the redness and flakiness and also helped with tightness and sore skin. Her skin definitely looks brighter and clearer and incredibly soft to the touch where as before it was dry and tight.

The Dermalogica website has loads of information about teen breakouts including what causes breakouts, the different kinds of acne, myths and different types of treatment. It’s a great starting point to see if Dermalogica is the right path for your child. I would highly recommend it, even just to get your teens into a good skincare routine.
