Sleeveless Knitwear

Now if you’re a woman of a certain age (like me) you’ll remember the tank tops of our childhood. Normally seen on small children and pipe smoking males, they weren’t necessarily a fashion statement. But the sweater vest has been part of our knitwear history since the 1920s when women started to dress in a more androgynous way, even going so far as to bind their breasts down to disguise their curves and appear more ‘boyish’. During the late 20s Women’s Weekly began publishing knitting patterns to appeal to women who were seeing their favourite stars of screen and stage and wanted to emulate what they were wearing.

In the 30s sweater vests were popular in sports with cricket, golf and tennis players donning the tank top and then up until the 1970s the sweater vest was mainly simple in design. The 1960s and 70s changed all that and the sweater vest became bolder, experimenting with different patterns and colours. It wasn’t until the 1990s and early 2000’s that they became popular with women again especially with those wanting a ‘preppy’ look.

So where has it evolved from this time round? The styles we are seeing today most likely have come from the egirls and eboys seen on TikTok where the trend for vintage items, anime style and K-pop (Korean) culture have become so popular. Designers quickly jumped on board and we started seeing the humble sweater vest styled in an exciting new way - mixing patterns, adding a belt, teaming with lux fabrics to take it from it’s preppy roots to a more high fashion look.

Now every high street store sells the trend and there’s so many ways to wear it. Over a shirt and jeans for a simple look or go all out wearing contrasting fabrics and patterns. The choice really is yours!

I love a mix of patterns and textures and this idea was inspired by the outfits of some of the influencers from Copenhagen fashion week. Everything is pulled together, but there’s an eclectic mix which is just superb. To achieve a look like this, always experiment by getting things out your wardrobe and having a play around. Have fun with your clothes and see what looks good. Yes some combinations might have you laughing out loud, but you might just stumble upon something that you love.

For a more classic style in muted colours, this Cos low V neck tank top is amazing. Wear over a shirt, a polo neck or a tee or if you’re really brave over a pretty bra! Teamed with jeans its the perfect outfit for easy classic style. Clogs are making a comeback for 2021 and it’s either a love it or hate it kind of style, I love it but find them hard to keep on my feet - but if you’re a fan, then these Coach ones are half price and absolutely gorgeous.

This tabard style tank top form Cos also comes in black and is such an easy style to wear. The loose turtleneck is really flattering and you can cinch in your waist with the tie belt or wear it loose. I’ve kept colours similar for a streamlined look with an oversized wrap coat and front seam trousers making a casual daytime outfit look super luxe.

Now my husband asked if I was doing a bad taste post when he saw this outfit, but that just proves that this combo is a winner as what does he know! I love the mix of brown and red and the pattern clash is a real statement. Not for everyone I’m sure, but if you like experimenting with colour, then perhaps try to mix in a few patterns to really stand out from the crowd!

There are so many sweater vests already in circulation, so always have a look through your favourite online vintage stores for any gems that stand out. I’ve seen quite a few on eBay etc so it’s so worth a scroll through. Cricket style vests are great as you get the oversized style, cable knit and a little bit of colour too. This one is currently on eBay for £45.

You know how much I love a jumper over a satin dress and this oversized cable knit sweater vest from The Frankie Shop is perfect for a bit of luxurious comfort. Add a belt to give your body a bit of shape and add knee high boots for winter cosiness. Alternatively add a pair of cashmere socks and snuggle up in front of the TV. Who says slip dresses aren’t for a night in!

This is a great little vest from Mango. I love the chunky armholes and v-neck which make it look more expensive than it is. Wear on it’s own or with a simple tee and then layer up with a long shacket for extra warmth. I’ve kept the colour palette neutral and added heels but it would look equally as good with trainers/boots or loafers.

Lastly this yellow Munthe tank has been seen on so many influencers and I can see why. The round neck lends itself well to a frill collar shirt or dress to give it a bit of a feminine edge. I’ve teamed it with a classic pair of blue jeans, loafers and a super cute half moon bag.
