Jeans for every body shape

Who has a nightmare when shopping for jeans. I know I do. It’s a minefield with every store promising to lift you shape you, give you the butt to rival Kim K… but often we end up with no jeans and feeling utterly rubbish. It’s not easy.

I always recommending spending a bit of time and shopping in real life for your perfect jeans. Only you knows your own body and how you want your jeans to look. For me, I love a vintage rigid denim with a straight leg, slightly cropped and high waisted - but that style isn’t for everyone. Many department stores have shop assistants that can help you, so it’s worth making an appointment and giving yourself time.

But for those that want a bit of an idea where to start, then I’ve put together a little guide to help you. My focus is on the following categories:

  • Big bums

  • Rounded tums

  • Flat bums

  • Short legs

  • Tall

  • Thick thighs

  • Ultra Slim

  • Big Hips

Look at the options below for some ideas. But remember, these are only ideas and you can throw the rules out the window if you want. You can wear whatever you want as long as you feel comfortable and feel great in what you wear. Ultimately it’s your choice!

Big Bum

For those with a bit of a butt like me, try to go for jeans that give a bit of lift and shape. Those of us with a bigger bum tend to get the dreaded gaping waist, so try a high waisted style with a bit of stretch that goes in at the waist and also try a flare to balance out your proportions.

Rounded Tums

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got a bit of a rounded tummy. Mine has got bigger as i’ve got older and as much as i’m trying to accept my new menopausal body, it’s still a bug bear of mine and I like to try and disguise it as much as possible. If you’re the same then i’d recommend shaping tummy control jeans that give you a bit of support. Also mid to high rise is a more flattering style.

Flat Bum

Those with a flatter bum can add shape with some amazing lifting and shaping jeans on the market. Also if you go for a V-shaped yoke at the back of the jeans this will give the illusion of a curvier bottom.

Short Legs

Try to always shop from the petite range as they get your proportions right. But if not, opt for cropped leg and skinny styles. Also, go for a high waist as this will give the illusion of a longer leg.

Tall

Similar to petite, go for the tall ranges at stores like M&S, but many brands are cut longer on the leg so will work for you. It’s worth trying out a few different brands as stores like Zara and some Danish brands always have a longer length inside leg. Sometimes breaking up the leg with a flare or a cropped style can help to break the length of the leg up a bit if you are conscious of your long legs.

Thick thighs

For those with bigger thighs opt for a loose fit to skim over the thighs or a really fitted flare that sculpts you in. Look for stretch for comfort and a darker wash.

Ultra slim

When you’re very slim, try to add detail around the waist, pleats, wide legs etc to give a bit of shape to your frame. Vintage 501s are great for you as they fit your shape perfectly as are a high waisted flare.

Big Hips

A jean with a bit of stretch will help to stop the gaping at the waist, and try to balance out your hips with a bootcut or flare slightly cropped at the ankle.
