90’s style icons
How old were you in the 90's? I was in my late teens and I think it might be one of the greatest decades ever! Ok maybe not, but there were some great things about it. Not least the amazing actors coming out of Hollywood. Everyone was a little grunge and a little bit experimental with their style. I loved how noone really cared about being polished, it was just throw on an old check shirt and scuffed up shoes, and go! I've been thinking a lot about 'the good old days', so I wanted to do a little homage to the 90's. I've chosen 7 of my fave actors from that era and re-created their style from things you can buy now.
The 90’s icons I decided to focus on are Lisa Bonet, Winona Ryder, Drew Barrymore, Halle Berry, Chloe Sevigny, Uma Thurman and Natalie Portman. These are the women that defined the decade for me. I’ll never forget the first time I saw Lisa Bonet in The Cosby Show or Natalie Portman as Mathilda in Leon. These were the cool girls, the ones we all wanted to be like. They had a rawness to them that was so different to other women. The 90’s was about pushing the boundaries with music, the arts, everything. It was the decade that made me who I am.
Fashion wise, it was all about mixing textures. This was the decade that put together chunky boots with pretty dresses. Slinky satin and Dr Martens or pretty florals and trainers. It was the first decade that started to mix styles from different eras as well as new styles such as acid wash and pleather!
The 90’s certainly wasn’t all good and some of it i’d like to forget ever happened, but I still look back fondly at this shiny happy decade from rave culture to the start of the world wide web! And what would we do without that?!
