Summer outfits

Typical, I write a blog post all about summer outfits, only for the heavens to open and it forecast rain all week! But it’s still humid and the rain won’t last forever, so this will give you time to get your summer wardrobe sorted for when the glorious sunshine comes back again.

I’ve had a lot of questions about summer wardrobes and even though we’re wearing less clothes, I think many people find it daunting navigating all the summer collections and copious amounts of summer dresses. We’re now well into the summer sales too, so it’s even more confusing.

For me, the key is to stick to what you love. So if you’re a minimalist, opt for lightweight trousers, shorts, vests, neutral colours. And if you’re a maximalist, then fill your boots with all the frills and flounce and colour. I often talk about style personality and if you know what yours is, then it can really help you when shopping for new pieces. Do you love colour, do you veer more towards the neutrals and simple aesthetic, do you love mixing prints, what items are the most worn and loved in your wardrobe, whose style do you admire the most… all these answers can help you determine what type of style personality you have to enable the building of your own personal capsule wardrobe to be completely tailored to you and no-one else.

So back to the summer outfits then. I have put together 7 different outfits for lots of different style personalities. Some simple and classic, others a bit more of a statement, but all with pieces that will last in your wardrobe and are perfect for summer.

Remember to stick to natural fabrics in the heat - especially if you're menopausal like me! So fabrics like linen, cotton, lyocell, merino, silk (although Silk is not good on really humid days) and even some jersey. Avoid anything polyester, nylon, leather, acrylic and heavy denim. I have included some denim shorts in my blog, but it's worth noting on really hot, humid days - a lighter pair of cotton or lyocell shorts will feel more comfortable.

The debate is out about rayon - it's a very lightweight fabric but it is man-made and is often blended with nylon or polyester. Due to it's incredible lightweight feel, in dry heat wearing rayon can be comfortable - but add any humidity to the mix and it's not so good.

All items are linked below the main image - just click to shop and I have also included lots of different options at the end of the blog to give you more ideas and inspiration.

First up, I’ve gone for a two-piece. They’re everywhere this summer (and if you want more inspo, see my blog on them from last week). They’re so versatile and can be worn as separates so you’re getting more wear out of them. This top would look gorgeous with jeans or shorts and equally the skirt would be great with a tee or vest or on the beach with a bikini. Granted, a lot of the two pieces have cropped tops but more often than not the skirt or trousers are high waisted, so it’s worth trying on as the gap is sometimes minuscule - that said, if you are dead against anything cropped there are plenty of co-ords that have longer length tops or shirts.

A simple vest is such a chic item to have in your wardrobe. And this season there are so many that make a statement, from asymmetric necklines to cut outs to one shoulder. Pair with jeans and heels for a perfect simple look. If you’re a bit like me and self conscious of your arms, a good tip is to throw a soft cardigan/jumper over your shoulders or even a light blazer. Or opt for a good fitting simple white or black tee instead.

I love denim shorts (on other people) but usually the only time i’d be seen in a pair is on holiday. But I love these longer length Bermuda style shorts that give you a bit of extra coverage and are high waisted so give the illusion of longer legs. Or opt for a loose pair of longer length tailored shorts in a silky material like lyocell that will be really comfy in the heat. I’ve teamed these with a shirred bandeau top and a blazer. Love this look.

For the maximalists out there - why not go all out and mix your prints. This absolutely gorgeous gingham dress from Warehouse is so pretty and looks way more expensive than it is. I have teamed it with a cute quilted jacket and some orange shoes. This would work really well for a day to night out when it gets a bit chilly in the evenings. A simple gold chain and clutch finishes the look off perfectly.

For those of you lucky to be getting a holiday this year, then this beach outfit is a winner. There is so much towelling around at the moment and it’s perfect for the beach so this throw on towelling jacket is great for drying off after a swim. Boden have some of the best and most comfy swimsuits on the market. They have two lengths, so if you’re long in the body, you won’t be constantly digging your swimsuit out your bum! I love this one as the pink and khaki is gorgeous and the ruched bodice is great for anyone conscious of their tummy area.

Every brand from the high street to high end has some version of a pretty blouse and it’s all a matter of taste whether you go for all the frills and colour or a bit more subdued. For the neutral lovers out there, this black one from & Other Stories is pretty enough without going overboard. Teamed with wide leg linen trousers and comfy sandals, it’s a perfect outfit for a lunch with friends. Also, how cute is the Mansur Gavriel fruits bag (adds it to my wish list!)

A classic Breton and navy trousers is a year round staple but in the summer opt for a lighter pair of trousers in either linen or cotton. This stripy lightweight jumper is perfect for when it’s a bit cooler. I’ve added a pair of gorgeous raffia shoes from Gather & See and a simple bag and straw hat. You could even swap out the navy trousers for Khaki ones and add a bright colour bag like red or green for a bit of contrast.

I’ve added a selection of items below that I’ve found while researching this week. Some classic pieces and some that make a bit more of a statement. But as always, try experimenting with what you have already in your wardrobe, or look at preloved sites for anything similar.

Thanks for reading. I hope it’s been useful.
